Constitutional Protections
1. Ex Post Facto Law
Any law that makes an act a crime that was not a crime at the time it was commited, or that increases penalties or renders conviction easier after the face, is illegal.

2. Writ of Habeas Corpus
A check against arbitrary arrest or imprisonment, it is a legal order requiring that a person in custody be brought to court in order that just cause can be shown for the person's detention. Habeas Corpus can be suspended only under emergency conditions such as martial law.

3. Bill of Attainder
Any act of a legislature that declares a person guilty and sets the punishment without benefit of a judicial trial is illegal.

Bill of Rights
Amendment 1
Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government.

Amendment 2
Right to bear arms.

Amendment 3
Troops may not be quartered in homes in peacetime.

Amendment 4
No unreasonable searches or siezures.

Amendment 5
No double jeopardy, no forced testimony against oneself, grand jury indictment required to prosecute a person for serious offense, no loss of life, liberty, or property without due process.

Amendment 6
Right to a speedy trial and defense counsel.

Amendment 7
Jury trial in suits where value exceeds $20.

Amendment 8
No cruel or unusual punisment.

Amendment 9
Unlisted rights are not nessacarily denied.

Amendment 10
Powers not delegated to the United States or denied to states are reserved to the states.
